The Musical Child

Using the power of Music to Raise Children who are Happy, Healthy, and Whole.

Welcome

On this site, you will live the whole experience of the book “The Musical Child” by Joan Koenig.

This is about making music together.

You don’t need any professional training. Music making takes place all over the world, in places where there are no music schools! Your baby’s first need is to communicate with you, and her favorite medium is music. This is your first duet. It’s time for us to think about music differently—not only through the lens of classical music training. Music is everywhere: stomping your feet, clapping or whistling is music-making!

You can either scan the QR code of each exercise in the book or pick and choose from the activities in each chapter. You and your child are embarking on a marvellous journey that will enrich both of your lives. Enjoy!

Music Class

"Humans were making music together long before the first note was written on the first staff, but the practice has largely disappeared from our daily lives. Music has never been so readily available on so many platforms, and yet we are several generations into the false belief that musicking—my preferred term for musical practice—requires arduous training. [...] There is an easy and natural way to include the wonders of music in children’s lives. I know, because I have spent most of my life doing it."

What the media say about the book :

The Musical Child is "full of sensible ideas to try out on newborn and young...my feeling is that you will probably want Koenig to move in with you!"

--Fiona Maddocks, The Guardian

"The method starts by giving kids “musical names” to go along with their spoken ones. Learning to recognize these notes (which can be borrowed from “Do-Re-Mi” or any other song) helps them take part in their first duet with you or other caregivers. "

-- Vicky Hallett, The Washington Post

"Koenig, director of Paris’s L’Ecole Koenig conservatory and kindergarten, debuts with an enthusiastic take on music being central to early social and creative development...Neuroscience bolsters her case that aural fine-tuning and imaginative improvisation aid developments in musical, linguistic, and social skills, and she shares developmentally appropriate activities for each year from ages one through six"--Publisher's Weekly

“I think what I’m trying to say is that we need to get away from the status of learning music and encourage our children to have more natural music experiences with their friends. Put together a little rock band. Schedule performances for the family. Allow them to explore it and to do it. "

-- The Daily Telepgraph
